Yellow Day

Bright, fabulous sunshine yellow has always been my favorite color, even as a toddler. I’d choose yellow items out of multicolored assortments and walk around all day clutching the yellow ring from my stacking ring toy.

I’m always kind of surprised when I meet other people whose favorite color is yellow. I could be wrong, but it seems like we’re a minority. A bright, passionate, happy minority.

I used to tone down my love of yellow, but eventually I stopped pretending. Now I’ll rock a yellow dress, and I love to celebrate finding ordinary items in yellow, like a wallet, a phone battery bank, a beach bag, or a throw rug.

Yellow Day is an unofficial holiday celebrated on June 20 that began as a sunny, unscientific response to Blue Monday, the third Monday in January, which someone dubbed the saddest day of the year because of post-holiday blues, winter weather, holiday debt, and abandoned New Year’s resolutions. The idea was that longer days, warmer weather, time outdoors, good company, and the anticipation of summer adventures made it the happiest day of the year.

People celebrate Yellow Day by wearing yellow, spending time outdoors, enjoying sunshine, doing things that make them happy, and sharing joy with others. It’s more of an informal happiness celebration than a holiday with established traditions.

I can’t tell you how many times, during my search for yellow things, I’ve wished I could just find a yellow store.

So I decided to create Yellow Day. Not yet a store, but for now, a curation of yellow things and other joyful finds for making any day a Yellow Day. (Coming soon)
